At Remedi Laser, every treatment is tailored to the individual. We understand that no two clients are the same. Laser hair removal is a clinically proven treatment that uses concentrated light energy to target the pigment within the hair follicle. The laser energy is absorbed by the hair, helping to disrupt future growth and achieve long-term hair reduction. Multiple treatments are typically required, as hair grows in different cycles and only hairs in the active growth phase can be effectively treated during each session, which is why we take the time to assess your skin type, hair characteristics, medical history, treatment goals, and any factors that may influence your results.
Our clinic uses a Polaris ND:yag 1064 — an advanced medical-grade solid-state fibre laser technology, designed to deliver effective long-term hair reduction whilst prioritising skin health and comfort. Treatments are suitable for a wide range of skin tones and can be adjusted to meet your individual needs throughout your course of treatment.
Unlike many clinics, laser treatments at Remedi are performed by Rebecca Pfiffer, a VTCT Level 4 qualified laser practitioner with over 12 years of hands-on laser experience and more than 20 years working within the aesthetics industry. As a laser educator, Rebecca not only performs treatments daily but also helps train and support other practitioners within the industry.
Every consultation includes a thorough assessment, patch testing, and a personalised treatment plan designed to provide safe, realistic and effective results. We believe in honest advice, evidence-based treatments and helping our clients make informed decisions about their skin and hair removal journey.
Located in Colchester, Essex, Remedi Laser provides professional, discreet and results-focused laser hair removal treatments for both men and women.

Laser hair removal is suitable for many people, but a thorough consultation is essential to determine whether treatment is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
The treatment works best when there is a contrast between the colour of the hair and the surrounding skin. Darker hairs typically respond most effectively because they contain more pigment for the laser to target.
During your consultation, we assess factors including:
Laser hair removal may not be suitable for everyone. Certain medications, active skin conditions, pregnancy, recent sun exposure, or specific medical conditions may require treatment to be postponed or avoided altogether.
At Remedi, every client receives an honest assessment before treatment begins. If laser hair removal is not suitable for you, we will explain why and discuss alternative options where appropriate. Your safety will always come before selling a treatment.

Yes, darker skin tones can be treated safely with laser hair removal, but the type of laser being used is extremely important.
Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin (pigment) within the hair. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment and converted into heat, which damages the follicle and reduces future hair growth.
The challenge with darker skin is that there is naturally more melanin present within the surrounding skin tissue. If the wrong type of laser is used, the laser energy can be absorbed not only by the hair but also by the skin itself. This can significantly increase the risk of complications such as burns, blistering, hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin), hypopigmentation (loss of skin colour) and scarring.
For this reason, the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength is widely regarded as the safest laser wavelength for treating darker skin tones. The longer wavelength penetrates deeper into the skin and is absorbed less readily by epidermal melanin than shorter wavelengths, allowing the laser to target the hair follicle whilst reducing unnecessary absorption within the surrounding skin.
Shorter wavelengths, such as Alexandrite (755nm) and some Diode lasers (typically 800-810nm), can be highly effective on lighter skin tones but generally carry a higher risk when used on darker skin due to their increased attraction to melanin within the skin itself.
However, even when using the correct technology, treating darker skin requires additional care, knowledge and clinical judgement. Darker skin types naturally present a higher treatment risk, which is why practitioner experience is just as important as the laser being used.
At Remedi, every client undergoes a detailed consultation, Fitzpatrick skin assessment and patch test before treatment begins. Treatment parameters are selected specifically for your skin type, hair characteristics and treatment goals, and adjusted throughout your course where necessary.
If you have a darker skin tone and are considering laser hair removal, choosing a clinic with experience treating darker skin safely is essential. The right technology in inexperienced hands can still cause complications, whereas the correct technology combined with appropriate training, assessment and treatment planning can deliver excellent results safely.
Many clinics advertise laser hair removal, but not all technologies work in the same way. Understanding the differences can help you make an informed decision about which treatment is most suitable for your skin type.
Laser hair removal works by delivering light energy into the hair follicle. The pigment (melanin) within the hair absorbs this energy, which is then converted into heat. If sufficient heat reaches the follicle, future hair growth can be prohibited.
A true laser produces a single wavelength of light. This means the energy is concentrated into one specific colour of light, allowing it to target a particular structure within the skin more precisely.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is different. It is not a laser and instead produces a broad spectrum of multiple wavelengths. Filters are then used to remove unwanted wavelengths. Because the energy is less focused, IPL is generally less selective than a true laser and often requires more treatments to achieve similar results.
Diode lasers are semiconductor lasers delivering typically around the 800-810nm wavelength range, they are still relatively attracted to melanin within the skin. This means extra caution is required when treating darker skin tones. Due to the multiple wavelengths the energy has to be delivered in short bursts- usually referred to as super hair removal or pain-free to avoid risk of thermal injury- however the results can be inconsistent due to the subliminal temperature that needs to be achived and thermol relaxation.
Alexandrite lasers operate at a wavelength of 755nm. This shorter wavelength has a very high attraction to melanin, making it highly effective for fair skin with dark hair. However, because it is so readily absorbed by pigment, Alexandrite lasers are generally only considered suitable for lighter skin types and clients with no recent sun exposure. Attempting to treat darker or tanned skin with Alexandrite technology can significantly increase the risk of burns, blistering and pigmentation changes.
Nd:YAG lasers operate at a wavelength of 1064nm. This longer wavelength penetrates deeper into the skin and is absorbed less readily by melanin within the surrounding skin tissue. This allows the energy to reach the hair follicle whilst reducing the risk of unwanted absorption by the epidermis.
For this reason, 1064nm Nd:YAG technology is widely regarded as the gold standard for treating darker skin tones safely. Whilst no laser treatment is completely risk-free, Nd:YAG technology offers the greatest safety margin when treating skin with higher levels of natural pigment.
However, technology alone is not enough. Treating darker skin carries a higher level of clinical risk regardless of the machine being used. Choosing a clinic with experience treating a wide range of skin tones is essential, as incorrect settings, inadequate assessment or poor treatment planning can still result in burns, blistering or pigmentation changes.
At Remedi, every client undergoes a detailed consultation, Fitzpatrick skin assessment and patch test before treatment begins. Treatments are tailored to the individual, taking into account skin type, hair characteristics, medical history and treatment goals to ensure the safest and most effective approach possible.
Many people assume that laser hair removal results are determined solely by the machine being used. Whilst technology is important, the knowledge and experience of the practitioner operating the device can have an equally significant impact on both safety and results.
Laser hair removal is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Every client presents with different skin tones, hair colours, hair densities, medical histories, hormonal influences and treatment goals. Selecting the correct settings requires an understanding of laser physics, skin anatomy, hair biology and how different skin types respond to laser energy.
A skilled practitioner must be able to recognise when treatment can safely proceed, when settings need adjusting and when treatment should be postponed altogether. They should also understand how medications, sun exposure, hormonal conditions and previous hair removal methods may influence both safety and effectiveness.
Experience becomes particularly important when treating clients with darker skin tones, hormonal hair growth, resistant hair, or areas that may carry a higher risk of side effects. The ability to identify potential complications before they occur is often what separates a safe treatment from an avoidable injury.
It is also important to understand that successful laser hair removal is rarely achieved by simply repeating the same settings at every appointment. As hair becomes finer, growth patterns change and the skin responds to treatment, adjustments are often required throughout the course to maintain both safety and effectiveness.
At Remedi, treatments are performed by Rebecca Pfiffer, a VTCT Level 4 qualified laser practitioner with over 12 years of laser experience and more than 20 years working within the aesthetics industry. In addition to treating clients, Rebecca also delivers laser training and education to other practitioners, giving her an in-depth understanding of both the science and practical application of laser treatments.
Ultimately, the safest laser in inexperienced hands can still cause complications, whilst the right knowledge, assessment and clinical judgement help ensure treatments are carried out safely and effectively.
Laser hair removal is often described as permanent hair reduction rather than permanent hair removal.
The goal of treatment is to significantly reduce the number of hairs that grow back by damaging the follicle’s ability to produce new hair. Many treated follicles may never produce another hair, whilst others may eventually recover and produce finer, lighter or slower-growing hairs.
The reason no ethical practitioner can guarantee permanent hair removal is because hair growth is influenced by a number of factors beyond the treatment itself. Hormonal changes, genetics, certain medications, pregnancy, menopause and medical conditions such as PCOS can all stimulate dormant follicles and trigger new hair growth in the future.
Laser hair removal is most effective on hairs that are in the active growth phase (anagen phase). As only a percentage of hairs are actively growing at any one time, multiple treatment sessions are required to target new groups of hairs as they enter the growth cycle.
At Remedi, we would always rather under-promise and over-deliver than create unrealistic expectations. For this reason, we advise clients to expect occasional maintenance treatments following the completion of their course. As a general guide, one to two top-up sessions per year may be required to maintain optimal results.
However, in reality, many of our clients enjoy years of excellent hair reduction without requiring any maintenance treatments at all. Others may choose to have an occasional top-up simply to keep their results looking their best.
Areas influenced by hormones, such as the face, neck, chin and certain intimate areas, are more likely to require maintenance over time due to the body’s ability to activate previously dormant follicles.
Every client responds differently, which is why honest consultation and realistic treatment planning are so important. Whilst no practitioner can ethically promise permanent hair removal for life, laser hair removal remains one of the most effective long-term solutions available for reducing unwanted hair and minimising the need for regular shaving, waxing or plucking.
One of the most common misconceptions about laser hair removal is that all unwanted hair can be removed in a single treatment. In reality, multiple sessions are required because hair grows in cycles.
At any given time, only a percentage of your hairs are actively growing. This stage is known as the anagen phase and is the point at which laser hair removal is most effective.
During the anagen phase, the hair remains connected to the structures that supply the follicle with nutrients and blood supply. When laser energy is absorbed by the pigment within the hair, heat can travel down to these structures and damage the follicle’s ability to produce future hair growth.
However, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time. Some hairs are transitioning between growth phases, whilst others are completely dormant beneath the skin’s surface. These hairs cannot be effectively targeted until they enter the active growth stage.
This is why a course of treatments is required. Each session targets a different group of hairs as they cycle into the anagen phase, gradually reducing the overall number of follicles capable of producing hair.
Many clients experience excellent results after their first few sessions and are delighted by the reduction in hair growth. However, it is not uncommon to see what appears to be a temporary increase in hair around sessions four or five. This can be particularly noticeable in clients who responded exceptionally well after their initial treatments.
Whilst this can be frustrating, it is often a normal part of the treatment process. Previously dormant hairs may begin cycling into active growth, creating the impression that hair has suddenly returned when in reality a new group of follicles has simply become treatable. Understanding this pattern is important, as it helps set realistic expectations and prevents clients from assuming their treatment has stopped working.
Another common misconception is that laser appointments should always be performed at fixed intervals. Whilst treatment guidelines are useful, hair growth does not follow a calendar. Every individual responds differently depending on the treatment area, hair density, hormonal influences, age, genetics and previous hair removal methods.
With over a decade of laser experience, we carefully monitor how each client responds throughout their course rather than automatically booking treatments at the same interval every time. In many cases, extending or adjusting the timing of appointments allows more hairs to enter the optimal growth phase before treatment, helping to maximise results whilst avoiding unnecessary sessions.
Our aim is not simply to complete a course of treatments, but to achieve the best possible long-term outcome in the most efficient way possible. By understanding how hair behaves throughout the treatment journey, we can tailor both the settings and treatment intervals to the individual, helping to save our clients both time and money.
At Remedi, treatment planning is based on clinical observation, experience and individual response rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. This allows us to create realistic treatment plans and deliver the most effective results possible for each client.
One of the most common questions we are asked is whether laser hair removal hurts. The honest answer is that everybody experiences treatment differently, and pain is highly subjective.
Laser hair removal does not feel like blunt force trauma such as a bump, knock or impact. Instead, the sensation comes from heat being generated within the hair follicle. For this reason, an individual’s tolerance to heat often plays a bigger role than their general pain threshold.
Interestingly, we often find that clients who sit comfortably through tattoos, piercings or needles do not always find laser treatments particularly comfortable, whilst others who dislike injections tolerate laser extremely well. The sensation is simply different, making it difficult to predict exactly how any individual will respond until treatment begins.
The feeling is commonly described as a brief hot flick or snapping sensation that lasts only a fraction of a second. The intensity can vary depending on the treatment area, hair density, skin type and stage of the treatment course.
Some areas of the body are naturally more sensitive than others. The upper lip is often one of the sharper sensations, although treatment itself takes only a matter of seconds. Underarms are another area that many clients find surprisingly sensitive, despite the treatment usually taking around one minute to complete. Intimate areas can also be more noticeable, particularly during the first few sessions when hair is at its thickest and densest.
At Remedi, our priority is achieving excellent results whilst maintaining client comfort wherever possible. We treat using effective clinical settings designed to target hairs at the earliest stages of the anagen growth phase. Lower settings may feel more comfortable during treatment but can be less effective at targeting follicles during these early growth stages, potentially leading to reduced results over time.
For clients who are more sensitive, we have a number of strategies available to improve comfort. This may include allocating additional time to pre-cool the skin before treatment, adjusting treatment pacing, and making use of advanced cooling technology throughout the procedure.
We also keep ice packs readily available within the clinic, and clients are always welcome to use these before, during or after treatment if they wish. Many clients find that simple cooling measures make a significant difference to their overall comfort.
One thing that often surprises people is how quickly treatments are completed. An upper lip can be treated in seconds, whilst underarms are often completed in around a minute. Even larger areas are usually much quicker than most clients expect.
With over a decade of laser experience, we have learned that comfort and results are not mutually exclusive. The aim is not to make treatment unnecessarily uncomfortable, nor is it to use settings so low that results are compromised. Instead, our goal is to find the optimal balance between safety, comfort and effectiveness for every individual client.
Many clients arrive feeling nervous about discomfort and leave wondering why they waited so long to start treatment.
Yes, laser hair removal can be extremely effective for reducing unwanted hair caused by hormonal conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
One of the most common symptoms associated with PCOS is hirsutism, a condition that causes excessive dark, coarse hair growth in areas where women would not typically expect to see it. This can include the chin, jawline, neck, upper lip, chest, abdomen and other areas of the body.
For many women, hirsutism is far more than a cosmetic concern. It can have a significant impact on confidence, self-esteem and emotional wellbeing. Many women describe feeling embarrassed, self-conscious or anxious about their hair growth, often spending years shaving, plucking, waxing or concealing it. Some avoid social situations, bright lighting, close-up photographs or even intimate relationships because of the distress it causes.
This is why we understand that laser hair removal can be genuinely life-changing for some women.
Laser hair removal works by targeting the active hair follicles responsible for producing unwanted hair. By damaging these follicles, the treatment can significantly reduce the thickness, density and rate of future hair growth.
However, it is important to understand that hormonal hair growth behaves differently to non-hormonal hair growth.
Whilst laser can effectively treat existing active follicles, it cannot stop the body from producing hormonal signals that may activate previously dormant follicles in the future. This means that clients with PCOS or hormonally driven hair growth often require more sessions than clients without hormonal influences and may benefit from occasional maintenance treatments over time.
This does not mean treatment is unsuccessful. In fact, many clients experience dramatic improvements in hair density, hair thickness and overall manageability. Going from shaving every day to shaving occasionally can have a profound impact on confidence and quality of life.
The key to treating hormonal hair growth successfully is setting realistic expectations from the outset. We would always rather under-promise and over-deliver than create unrealistic expectations. Whilst no ethical practitioner can guarantee permanent removal of hormonally driven hair, laser hair removal remains one of the most effective long-term treatment options available for managing unwanted hair associated with PCOS and hirsutism.
For many women, the goal is not perfection. It is freedom from the constant cycle of shaving, plucking, waxing and worrying about unwanted hair. In many cases, that freedom alone can be life-changing.
One of the most common questions we are asked is how many laser hair removal sessions will be required. Whilst every client is different, most people can expect to require between 6 and 10 treatments to achieve significant long-term hair reduction.
However, it is important to understand that laser hair removal is not an exact science, and no ethical practitioner can guarantee a specific number of sessions or a particular outcome. Hair growth is influenced by a variety of factors including genetics, hormones, age, medication, skin type, hair colour, hair density and the area being treated.
Some clients achieve excellent results within fewer sessions, whilst others may require additional treatments, particularly in hormonally influenced areas such as the face, neck and certain intimate areas.
In very rare cases, laser hair removal may produce limited results despite treatment being carried out correctly. This is why careful client selection, realistic expectations and ongoing monitoring are such important parts of the treatment process.
At Remedi, we do everything possible to maximise the likelihood of a successful outcome. Before treatment begins, we assess suitability through a detailed consultation, medical history review, skin assessment and patch testing where appropriate. Throughout your course, we closely monitor your progress, assess the clinical response of the skin and hair, document results and regularly discuss your feedback and observations.
We do not believe in simply repeating the same treatment over and over without evaluating the outcome. If at any stage we are not satisfied with the progress being achieved, we investigate potential contributing factors and work closely with the client to identify possible causes. This may include reviewing treatment intervals, hormonal influences, medications, lifestyle factors or other variables that may be affecting results.
Many clinics focus solely on delivering treatments. We focus on monitoring outcomes.
This ongoing assessment allows us to make informed decisions throughout your course and helps ensure treatments remain both effective and appropriate as your hair responds.
The quality of our treatments and the outcomes we achieve for our clients are incredibly important to us. We believe in honest communication, realistic expectations and complete transparency throughout the treatment journey. If something is progressing exactly as expected, we will tell you. Equally, if we feel an adjustment needs to be made, we will discuss this openly and work with you to achieve the best possible result.
Ultimately, laser hair removal is a partnership between practitioner and client. By combining appropriate technology, careful treatment planning, ongoing monitoring and client feedback, we can give you the greatest possible opportunity of achieving excellent long-term results.
